Beyonce Magazine Advert Analysis
13th October 2015

Compared to the previous adverts that I have analysed, Beyonce uses a two page spread, rather than the conventional one page, making her advertisement seem important, as it has been allocated more space in the magazine. This also makes the advert stand out, as being larger makes it more difficult to miss. The dark colouring of the advert makes for a more eye-catching image, as magazine pages are usually bright, in order to make the information easy to read - therefore this dark advert stands out against the normal bright pages.
By using a split-image advert, where two similar pictures are presented side by side, we can see Beyonce's "alter-ego" Sasha Fierce. The image of Beyonce on the left shows her usual self, stripped back and 'ordinary'. The image to the right shows the more extravagant version of Beyone, in which she becomes Sasha Fierce - 'extraordinary' (Richard Dyer). The typography over the images is left simply saying "I AM..." over the image of her normal self. Over the image of Sasha Fierce, the typography reads SASHA FIERCE", with lines defining her name. This shows the importance of the difference between Beyonce and Sasha Fierce. Beyonce's name is written in larger font than the other lettering, drawing the viewer's attention as they immediately recognise the advert. The lettering is also metallic and reflective, making it look expensive, showing her wealth and importance. The colouring of the typography is gold and sliver, again showing her wealth, making people associate her with money and grand achievements. To the bottom right of the advert, hit song titles are included, to make people want to buy the album to listen to the other great songs she has made.
Including inset pictures in the bottom left corner showing her album covers creates familiarity for the viewer, making them more likely to buy the album upon seeing it instore. This also shows the connection between the images in the advert ad her album. The advertisement uses serif font, to add to the grandeur of Beyonce's image and reflect her style of wealth and importance. The advert becomes before sophiticated, therfore appealing to a wide audience of younger and older fans.
The advert for Beyonce's album uses the conventional technique that many other adverts I have analysed used. The 'Z' shape line of vision directs the viewers' eye across the advert, to ensure all of the information is conveyed. Firstly, we look across both images of Beyonce, and compare the difference between her normal self and her alter-ego. We then follow through the information to see the title of the album "I am... Sasha Fierce", and then to the inset album covers. Finally, ours eyes follow along the bottom of the advert to see the rest of the information such as release date and songs included.
